Why Ethiopia and Somaliland are natural partners

- The current Ethiopian leadership specially under Meles has wasted a lot of time and resources on useless missions such as restoring Mogadishu. They say: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. This is certainly true when it comes to Somalia. Ethiopia can tell Somalia and its leaders to restore peace and seal the common border but it is up to only Somalis in Somalia to take that initiative.

Time and time again for the last 22, they have been baby sat, their diapers removed, thrown out, recycled and tried with all different sizes but no they are still crying for foreign assistance.

For once Ethiopia needs to set its priorities straight and understand the regional affairs and issues. Only Somalis in Somaliland are capable of restoring peace and statehood to Somalia but those Somalis have given up on Somalia and its about time Ethiopia did the same.

Somalia is no where near having a stable state while Somaliland has been living in peace since 1993.

Some times, all Amhara, Tigray and even Oromo look and act the same from the surface but it only takes bit of concentration, education and observation to understand they are not all the same. For example one can't argue that Tigrays in Eritrea are same with Tigrays in Ethiopia. Same is true about Afar in Djibouti and Ethiopia.

This week Ethiopia finally came out and it seems maybe just maybe Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn might be more brave than his dead boss. Maybe its because Desalegn owes Somalis in Somalia nothing unlike Meles who was shaped, molded and created in Mogadishu labs by Siad Barre and Ali Geedi.

Here is the news:

Ethiopia says preparing to pull troops out of Somalia

(Reuters) - Ethiopia will withdraw its troops from Somalia soon, its prime minister said on Tuesday, voicing frustration with the Mogadishu government and African Union peacekeeping forces that are also battling Islamist militants there.

After waging an ill-fated war in Somalia in 2006-2009, Ethiopia in 2011 once again rolled troops into Somalia to fight al Qaeda-allied al Shabaab, opening a third front alongside Kenyan troops and an African Union mission.

At the time Ethiopia pledged to stay in the war-ravaged country until Somali government could ratify a new constitution and its ragtag military was able to fend off the Islamist threat on its own.

However, last month Ethiopian troops unexpectedly withdrew from Hudur, the capital of Bakool province near the Ethiopian border, enabling al Shabaab to retake the dusty town.

Hailemariam Desalegn, who replaced Ethiopia's long-serving Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in September, stopped short of announcing a full withdrawal but voiced concern with the pace of progress in Somalia, recovering from two decades of civil war.

"It has taken them (African peacekeepers and Somalia) a year already and they repeatedly assure us each month but fail to deliver so we pulled out," said Hailemariam, referring to pledges by African Union's Amisom force to replace Ethiopian troops.
"The main issue now is to accelerate our complete withdrawal towards our border. This is what we are fulfilling," he told Ethiopia's parliament.

Hailemariam said Addis Ababa was paying for its military mission in Somalia from its own coffers and Western diplomats say financial issues are one of the main reasons behind Ethiopia's discontent, along with strained relations with Mogadishu and Amisom.

22 years of disappointments. I hope now Ethiopians understand why Somalis in Somaliland said they will not wait and decided to walk away and put their own houses in order instead of waiting for Mogadischo.
