UAE economy to grow 3.3% in 2013

''Growth will be aided by high public spending and ‘save haven’ status''. Emirates24/7

- High public spending due to strong oil prices will ally with Dubai’s recovery and safe investment to boost the UAE economy by around 3.3 per cent in 2013 despite an expected fall in crude output, according to a key Saudi bank. The country’s real GDP swelled by around 4.9 per cent in 2011 and 4.2 per cent in 2012 and growth will likely remain relatively high this year while its fiscal system will continue to record largely surpluses, Saudi American Bank group (SAMBA) said.

Somalilander's lifelong dream: building his own helicopter

“I believe that one day, we will be able to fly in Somaliland’s skies”. Said Abdi

- It all started when Said Abdi Jidheh, a car mechanic in Somaliland, heard about a fire in which several people died. The local authorities didn’t have a helicopter to assist in a rescue. This tragedy inspired Jidheh to build one himself – from scratch.

Seven years after starting on his ambitious project, and despite challenges he’s faced along the way, Jidheh is still as motivated as ever. One of our Observers, Mohamed Admin Jibril, went to meet him in his little warehouse space in Hargeisa, Somaliland’s main city.

Islam Leader Calls for Muslim Holidays in Germany

- Germany is home to some 4 million Muslims. With the long Easter weekend around the corner, a leading member of the country's Muslim community has called for legal recognition of two Muslim holidays, drawing criticism from among Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling conservatives.

In 2010 former German President Christian Wulff made the assertion that, "Islam belongs in Germany," provoking something of a conservative backlash. Now, Germany's Central Council of Muslims (ZMD) is bringing the topic back into the public eye -- and suggesting the introduction of statutory Muslim holidays throughout Germany.

LSE: Somaliland Women Discuss Their View Of Leadership

As presented at a recent London School of Economics (LSE) Africa seminar series, SOAS’s Siham Rayale discusses what leadership means to the women of Somaliland.

- Women in Somaliland have taken on leadership positions in novel ways since the end of the civil war. They have translated their participation during the early peace process into leaders of civil society organisations, political institutions, and grassroots campaigners for women’s rights such as the buying, selling and exporting of meat more specifically.

Somaliland reservoir to ease water shortages

- The Somaliland government is undertaking an $800,000 project to build a reservoir and water distribution pipelines that will serve about 80,000 residents in Hargeisa's Ahmed Dhagah District. Construction of the reservoir began December 15th, and project officials say they expect it to be operational as the region enters its rainy season at the end of April.

Hargeisa Water Agency Director Ibrahim Siyad Yonis said the reservoir is expected to produce 1,000 cubic metres per day, equal to 5,000 barrels. "Considering seasonal changes, this will regularly supply water for at least nine months each year," he told Sabahi.

ABU DHABI // Senior government figures from Somaliland have held three days of talks in the UAE on investments, aid and security

''We have met the leadership of the country and responsible leaders, and had fruitful discussions," said Ahmed Mahamoud Silanyo (Somaliland president).

Somaliland declared independence in 1991, but has struggled for recognition from the international community, despite having a democratically elected government.

Respect the fundamental rights of self determination of Somaliland- part one

''No one else has the right to pressure the president of Somaliland except his people who have the right to urge him when to go or not to go London conference''. Mr Mead

- To those of us who don’t have the emotional bond with (Somaliland) the Mother or did not live in her tragic history, but instead have the emotional bond with material benefit on her expense, be aware that attempting to eat (national cause) the forbidden tree is seriously deadly. Mr. Siilanyo and his collection of aids in his administration conduct the peoples (government) business as their own enterprise! The danger lies when they venture to eat the ‘forbidden tree’ and that is when they trivialize or betray the ultimate cause which is the sanctity of the independence of Somaliland.

Human Rights Watch: Protect Displaced People At Risk (Somalia)

“Instead of finding a safe haven from fighting and famine, many displaced Somalis who came to Mogadishu have found hostility and abuse,” said Leslie Lefkow,

- Members of state security forces and armed groups have raped, beaten, and otherwise abused displaced Somalis who have arrived in Somalia’s capital fleeing famine and armed conflict since 2011, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The new Somali government should urgently improve the protection and security of Mogadishu’s internally displaced population.

POLITICO: Somaliland Signed Lobbying & Communications Contract With Glover Park Group

- Smaliland signs with Glover Park Group: The Ministry of Presidential Affairs of the Republic of Somaliland has signed a lobbying and communications contract with Glover Park Group, according to a new filing with the Department of Justice. Somaliland is a self-declared, unrecognized state — officially, it is an autonomous region of Somalia. The region's quasi-independent status dates from the beginning of the Somali Civil War, when former president Siad Barre began massacring citizens of the region. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 amid the collapse of the Somali government, but it has not been recognized by any foreign states or international organizations.

A call to all Somalilanders to defend their hard won independence in the face of London conspiracy conference scheduled seven May

- As patriotic Somailander, I have no doubt that the upcoming conference on so called Somalia scheduled to be held in London come seven May is solely designed to undermine the hard won independence of my beloved country of the Republic of Somaliland, at a time when my nation fulfilled every norm and requirement stipulated by the international law in order to win political recognition which should have been a matter of formality in the case of our republic of Somaliland, in the light of the historical fact that Somaliland was a separate country, which gained independence from Britain on June 26 1960 and was independent for brief period during which Somaliland was recognized by more than 36 states.

Somaliland: Hargeisa youth flock to gyms

- Youth are increasingly signing up for memberships at private gyms in Hargeisa, whose number has swelled like a bicep on a bodybuilder. The boom in local fitness centres is helping to create jobs, promote good health and lure youths towards positive activities, gym owners and local officials say.

"Exercising is an entertaining alternative for young people that takes the place of substance abuse and engaging in organised crime," said Hamza Ali Jibril, owner of Golds Gym in Hargeisa.

CONCERN Worldwide Somaliland & SATG Collaboration

CONCERN Worldwide Somaliland has been assisting rural communities in the Gabiley Region since 2011. This region is unique in comparison to other parts of Somaliland in that it has a relatively high agricultural potential due to a more favorable climate and soils conducive to crop production. A contextual analysis by CONCERN recommended efforts to promote appropriate agricultural technologies as they progressed in a four-year project (2012 – 2015) known as Strengthening Household Economy and Reinforcing Resilience in Somaliland (SHERRIS). They have recently engaged SATG for that technical assistance.

Our (SSE) Message Is Simple; ''Somaliland Is Here To Stay''

Press release

- Unlike the February 2012 London conference on the future of Somalia to which Somaliland was invited separately by the United Kingdom government, the planned May 2013 London conference for Somalia organised and chaired jointly by the United Kingdom and Somalian government is totally different. As has been publicised, the aim of this conference is to provide assistance to the Somalian government to achieve its stated policies which include upholding "the unity and integrity of Somalia" while the same Somalia is illegally claiming authority over Somaliland.

[Somaliland]: What Kind Of International Justice Is This?

- The International community recognizes the undemocratically selected Somalia government in Mogadishu without giving in-depth considerations and offering the same status to Somalia's former equal union partner to the North – the Republic of Somaliland. Due to the indifference and illegal negligence of Somaliland by the international Community, the Somaliland people have concluded that the International Community is just plain wrong and disrespectful towards the Republic of Somaliland. Not only that, but calling the democratic Republic of Somaliland an autonomous region of Somalia is cheap affront and those who are relentlessly doing this injustice to Somaliland will be kept in memory.

President Ahmed Siilanyo: A Nation Builder driven by Fairness, Compassion and Devotion to Duty.

- The Somaliland Republic is headed by a democratically elected President. The Somaliland people had given the President the political capital and the governmental instrument to do things better. He has been given a full mandate to serve and secure the nation and to safeguard the national interest in the first place; and to act and conduct on the letter of the rule of law and the country’s constitution. Therefore, President Ahmed Siilaanyo is the only one who has the constitutional power to determine into which direction our country will go. He is the only one legally authorized to decide on which crucial policy decisions should be made.

He addressed the company's interests in Africa with reporters on the sidelines of a luncheon in Boston.

Somaliland: University of Hargeisa

Jon with Dr. Abdi Gaas
- The University of Hargeisa (UoH) began as a primary/secondary school in 1969. After Somaliland declared its independence as a sovereign state in 1991, the need was ever greater due to years of neglect of the north by the southern led government. The University was founded in the year 2000 and has nearly 5000 students. Their motto is “Knowledge is Light.”

I was introduced to Dr. Abdi H. Gaas who was part of the Somali Diaspora from the 1970’s. He returned to Somaliland, after living in New Jersey, six months ago to take up the post as UoH President in order to contribute toward the education. His background included business, financial accounting as well as curriculum design. He gave a warm welcome.

The black man on the bus, they pat him on the head and push him in the back. They make jokes about his pronunciation of the name of the market he is going to. He sits still, waiting for the humiliation to pass. A Somali man gets beaten at the bus station because he allegedly stole something. He doesn’t fight back, but cries. Passersby look the other way.

(Archive): The Other Horn Of Africa - '' Somaliland

HARGEISA – Drought, famine, refugees, piracy, and the violence and terrorism endemic to the shattered city of Mogadishu, a capital ruined by civil war: these are the images that flash through peoples’ minds nowadays when they think of the Horn of Africa. Such perceptions, however, are not only tragically one-sided; they are short-sighted and dangerous

Behind the stock images of a region trapped in chaos and despair, economies are growing, reform is increasingly embraced, and governance is improving. Moreover, with Yemen’s government imploding across the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa’s strategic significance for maritime oil transport has become a primary global security concern. In short, the Horn of Africa is too important to ignore or to misunderstand.
