A Threat To Somaliland: Guled A/rahman

- Somaliland is unrecognized country located in the horn of Africa. This country separated from Somalia in 991, yet it did not reach its target of getting recognition from the world. Despite the hardships it faced in forming and maintaining a democratic government, it had reached many accomplishments. For example, since when it seceded from Somalia, it had won to stabilize and end the clashes among its clans. It also had won to form a democratic government based on fair elections without external aid. However, Somaliland failed to fully attract the eyes of the world. Many challenges are suggested to be reasons for this failure, but two of them are agreed on by many views. khat and the charcoal are the problems that severely affect the economy.

Khat has severely damaged the economy of Somaliland and the government has not tried anything to tackle this problem. Each day, many Khats poured from Ethiopia to the all regions of Somaliland. In return, billions of dollars go to Ethiopia. Somaliland wastes all these money for nothing; it has many other profitable ways to use this money. For example, it can use it for promoting the education, or create jobs for its citizens.

Instead Somaliland government allows Khat to inter the country, which brought many problems. For example, Khat became a threat to the peace of the country. Many people addicted it. So, when they could not get money for it, they would just rob other people. So Somaliland government needs to tackle this problem by raising the tax of the Khat.

Al most every house in Somaliland use charcoal for cooking. Everyday many cars full of charcoal get in the Hargeisa and all other regions. This deeply damaged the environment of the rural areas and it made those areas almost a desert. This also became a big threat to the economy of Somaliland, because when the most of the trees were cut down, the soil run of nutrients. In return, this caused the soil to unable to grow enough trees for the livestock, which is the backbone the Somaliland economy.

If Somaliland government does not quick action to deal with this problem, Somaliland will soon change into a desert, and as a result, the economy of the country will be collapsed, and the hope of getting recognition will sink in the shades of hopelessness.
