Somali refugees in the Netherlands protest

- Dozens of Somali refugees spent last night on the pavement outside the office of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) in the southern Dutch city of Den Bosch. The group are protesting about restrictions that have been placed on their freedom of movement.

The 77 Somalis have all had their requests for asylum turned down and are waiting to be deported. However, the Dutch Council of State decided two weeks ago that Somalia was still too unsafe for them to be forced to return. The Council also ruled that they must not be kept in detention, so they were placed in an asylum seekers’ centre and ordered not to leave the surrounding district and to report daily to the authorities. The refugees say they feel they are being treated as criminals and would rather sleep on the street than live in an asylum centre.  Speaking to Dutch press agency Novum, one of the men said, “We want to live like normal people, not like criminals.”

A spokesperson for Immigration Minister Gerd Leers told Dutch public broadcaster NOS that the minister will not be influenced by the protest.  He said the Somalis were free to return voluntarily to their homeland if they were unhappy with their treatment in the Netherlands.

Zenawi's exit? Why EAC should worry

Security: Regionally, Zenawi has been one of the key players in the fight against the Somali militant organisation Al Shabaab. He has also been crucial in mediating in the dispute between Sudan and South Sudan.

Infrastructure: Zenawi has also been one of the movers behind massive development projects like Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Project (LAPSSET).

Stability: Many analysts in the region worry about the political situation in a post-Zenawi Ethiopia, and are sceptical that the country can pull off a smooth transition.

Geopolitics: Led by Ethiopia, which contributes to over 80 per cent of the Nile’s water, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda signed an agreement on the Nile River Basin Co-operative Framework in 2010 without the involvement of Sudan and Egypt. With Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi seriously ill, East African leaders need to start worrying about what his impending exit will mean for the region

Accused barbecue shooter is Somalian refugee

TORONTO - An accused gunman charged with firing a weapon at a Scarborough barbeque where two people were killed and 23 others wounded arrived in Canada as a refugee from Somalia seeking a better life, border officials say.

But the 19-year-old allegedly “fell in with the wrong crowd” after obtaining Canadian citizenship, officers of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said.

The officers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said since he has been granted Canadian citizenship, it would be nearly impossible to deport him in the event of a conviction.

Nahom Tsegazab, 19, of Toronto, has been charged with the reckless discharge of a firearm. He is expected back in court this week and is the only suspect charged in the July 16 mass shooting.

Somalia: Organic peace is needed

- By contrast, Somaliland entity, the northern part of Somalia (former British Somaliland) that declared its independence on May 18, 1991, is peaceful and the level of stability is impressive. The local indigenous clans built pluralistic political institutions that are organic. Two presidential polls took place with a peaceful transfer of power, one in 2003 and another in 2010. Despite its achievements, Somaliland’s independence has been not recognized because the United Nations and the US State Department still pretend Somaliland is a part of the failed state of Somalia.

For decades, the international community made more than 16 attempts, including foreign military interventions, to establish a central government in Mogadishu — the ground zero of the failed state of Somalia. None of those interferences achieved success. In fact, America gave up on Somalia after the death of 18 US Rangers in the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” tragedy. After 9/11, everything changed, including America’s decision to limit involvement in Somalia to a narrow focus on counter-terrorism and more recently, combating piracy.

Somali clans are not religion-based. With their nomadic lifestyle and strong clan-based system, they are more interested in controlling scarce resources....

Globolization: Vice Or Virtue For Somaliland.

''We receive around US dollars 500 million from Somaliland Diasporas annually. Does livestock trade give us that much? I don’t think so,....'' Abdi

- Somaliland has a territory that occupies an area of 137,600 km square, virtually eight times bigger than Djibouti, and a coast of around 850 km. Somaliland economy is and has been dependent traditionally on livestock. The country is naturally endowed with pastoral land well-suited to animal rearing. Moreover, Berbera port is the most suitable outlet for exporting livestock not only for Somaliland and Somalia but for entire horn of Africa. Back to Somaliland nomad economy before exposure to outside world namely Arabs and Europeans, Somalilanders were self-sufficient and squarely reliant for their livelihood on livestock and their byproducts.

Somallilanders started to export livestock to Arab countries just in the early years of last century. Some of you may get flabbergasted if I say that some of the merchants who launched the livestock trade are still alive. When it comes to foreign aid, Somalilanders has not been recipient of such thing until very recently. This shows that we had been auto-sufficient before we have opened up to outside world. Despite being nomads with all its associated hardships, we feel nostalgia for the well-balanced environmental ecology that provided us a very proud, independent livelihood for hundreds of years.

Sh. Mustafe Xaaji Ismaaciil: ''Isku-kalsoonida''

Designing a Donor Fund for Somaliland

- STATT was recruited by DANIDA and DFID to provide analysis and facilitate consultations towards the design of a donor fund for Somaliland. STATT’s White Hat Program and Resonance Program combined to provide expertise in both aid effectiveness and fragile states. The consultations took place during a period in which, after decades of war and instability, some hope has emerged that a peaceful and durable settlement might be possible for what has been viewed as an intractable conflict in Somalia.

The situation in Somaliland, the semi-autonomous region in the north of Somalia, has never been more positive in recent decades. Successful free and fair Presidential elections in 2010 and more than a decade of comparative stability have strengthened the argument that the region is now well-placed to achieve real and lasting development. In this respect, the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) is intended to provide a critical dividend to stability and make a significant contribution to the country’s development.

The Guardian: Somaliland's thriving livestock business – in pictures

Somaliland : breeding and raising livestock industry

''In Somaliland, where farm animals easily outnumber people, livestock contributes 60-65% of the gross domestic product. Most hard currency is generated through the export of livestock and 60% of people depend on livestock for a living. The market in Hargeisa and the port of Berbera are at the centre of this thriving business'' The Guardian

- A former British protectorate, Somalilandwas created in the 1880s to ensure supplies of meat for troops in the British Indian outpost in Aden, hence its nickname, "Aden's butcher's shop". These days, millions of animals are shipped every year from Berbera's port, built by the Soviet Union during the cold war, and it provides an economic lifeline for Somaliland. In 2010, 2.5 million cattle were exported through the port, with about 78% going to Saudi Arabia, 20% to Yemen and the rest to Egypt and Oman. Livestock and remittances are the mainstays of the economy, with livestock production contributing 60-65% of gross domestic product and most hard currency generated through the export of livestock.

Berbera Port And Pastoralism Prove Livestock's Worth In Somaliland: Mark Tran

MDG : Mark Tran in Somaliland : breeding and raising livestock industry

- With its stretches of wasteland covered with rubbish and dotted with rubble and ruined buildings, its scruffy vendors' shacks and broiling heat, the coastal town of Berbera is no beauty spot.

A former British protectorate, Somaliland was created in the 1880s to ensure supplies of meat for troops in the British Indian outpost in Aden, hence its nickname, "Aden's butcher's shop".

Given Berbera's importance to Somaliland's economy, huge responsibility rests on Ali Omar Mohamed, 50, who has been general manager of the port on and off since 1994. On the first day of Ramadan, on 20 July, he took a couple of visitors on a tour of the port on a blisteringly hot day.

One can be Dutch and Muslim at the same time

- A few years ago, I had a conversation in a mosque in Rotterdam with two Muslim girls who were about 6 or 7 years old. They asked me, in fluent Dutch, if I was Turkish. I explained that I was Dutch, and had in fact converted to Islam. At one point during our exchange, one of them said, “So back when you were still Dutch ... ” This innocent statement reveals a sad reality: These children, born and raised in the Netherlands, were already “programmed” to think that people cannot be both Dutch and Muslim. Many young Muslims who were born in the Netherlands feel alienated in society, which is illustrated by conversations like this one. This feeling can lead to stereotyping, and a disconnect between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Despite this, through my work as the director of the Platform for Islamic Organizations Rijnmond (SPIOR) – the Netherlands’ only local Muslim umbrella organization, comprised of mosques and grassroots Muslim organizations around Rotterdam – I am optimistic about the impact of a number of people looking for positive connections and common ground. As was the case in the West, the events of 9/11 were a turning point for Muslims in the Netherlands. People who before 9/11 were considered guest laborers, migrants or ethnic minorities were suddenly identified as Muslims.

Hore Kooxda Al-islaax waxay shirk an oo kale ah ugu qabsadeen Hargeysa iyagoo ka soo saaray bayaan aad u dheeraa oo dadweynaha Reer Somaliland dareen shaki leh ka muujiyeen wakhtigaasi, balse xukuumaddu wax talaabo ah kamay qaadin, taasina waa ta keentay in kooxdani mar kale shirk u qabsato Hargeysa iyadoonay wax cabsi ahi ka hayni Nidaamka Dawliga ah ee Dalka ka jira.

Imprisoned refugees thrown on Sana’a streets

Refugees held a protest outside the Ministry of Human Rights building to call attention to perceived excessive force used by security forces to remove them from the immigration prison in Sana’a.

- African refugees and asylum seekers demonstrated outside the Human Rights Ministry in Hadda on Monday morning, protesting excessive force used by Yemeni security forces to remove them from the country’s immigration prison the previous evening. According to the former prisoners, security forces forcibly removed them from the prison. Security forces used tear gas and rubber bullets, the former prisoners said, throwing tear gas canisters into cells to disorient them, before dragging them out and beating them with steel rods. Ethiopian, Eritrean and Somali refugees who were in the prison now live on the streets.

Following last year’s 11-month demonstration, refugees set up tents outside UNHCR’s Sana’a office before being removed by Yemeni security forces. UNHCR said it offered the refugees a one-time payment to end demonstrations outside the office. Refugees said they were offered $400 per family, though those who accepted UNHCR’s offer said they only received $200 of the promised $400.

During the height of the political uprising, refugees—facing increased violence from Yemeni security forces—demanded a durable and permanent solution to their situations.

You clever old goat

- And Dr Bihi sets out to "educate" the boy in the ways of finance. Jude likes stories, so he tells him the story of how he, the doctor, became a billionaire back in Somaliland by way of a single goat, creating a culture of futures and electronic trading of goats that swept the world markets, producing hundreds of billionaires in a free market dedicated to the theories of Adam Smith (born 1723), the recognised father of capitalism. The explanation is blindingly simple, exquisitely obvious, and overwhelmingly rewarding (the good doctor explains it a lot better than my economics lecturers at university), in all its tempting lures. The bubble created ends up "earning" 14 trillion dollars profit for the United Nations before it bursts in the "invisible" hand of Adam Smith.

This benefactor of mankind is, after all, far greater than those who believed in a controlled economy and regulation, such as Stalin and Mao, his theories allowed to triumph in Somaliland where there was no government to speak of, and therefore trade was not overburdened with regulation. Just as will be the case in Ireland under Charles J Haughey, Dr Bihi enthuses to his young acquaintance.

Somaliland moves towards new banking era

MDG : Mark in Somaliland : international money transfer company Dahabshiil

- Without formal banks, Somaliland lacks cash machines or credit card facilities, obliging visitors to the country to bring in wads of dollars. But that is about to change as the former British protectorate is poised to pass a banking law that will, for the first time, allow companies to operate as formal banks, offering services taken for granted throughout much of the world. Somaliland paved the way for the new banking regime when it passed a law in April formally establishing a central bank.

It has been a long time coming. Somaliland has existed – albeit without international recognition – since 1991, when it broke away from Somalia and declared itself a republic. For now, Somalilanders rely on remittance companies, notably Dahabshiil – one of Africa's biggest money-transfer companies, for their financial needs.

Dahabshiil is run by the irrepressible Abdirashid Duale, who is busy planning the company's next phase. From its humble beginnings in the north-western town of Burao, the company – founded by Abdirashid's father, Mohamed Said Duale, in 1970 – has become a money-transfer powerhouse, operating in 155 countries, including all Somali-speaking regions – Somaliland, Somalia, Djibouti and parts of Ethiopia.

Ayaan to receive Facial Reconstruction Surgery in Australia: EDNA ADEN

- Those of you who have been following Edna’s work for a long time will be aware of her efforts to find help for Ayaan who, as a small child, was shot in the face Somaliland’s war to regain its independence. A web site, HelpAyaan.org, was created, a YouTube video was produced, and sufficient funds were raised but it took a long time before everything finally came together.

At last, all appears settled. Edna has made the following announcement:

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Rotarians in Brisbane, Australia, who are supporting Ayaan to finally get her face fixed. We have been trying for many years to help Ayaan but there has been one obstacle after the other until now. Let’s hope there will be no more disappointments for Ayaan this time.

“We are so grateful to the surgeon in Brisbane who has offered to help Ayaan free of charge with the surgery that she needs. Blessings to him.

Mary Harper sees a country in microcosm at the Hargeisa International Book Fair: SOMALILAND

- Shortly after I posted a blog about a book fair in Somaliland, I received a comment from a contributor to a highly respected international magazine. He asked whether it was a joke. As if I was making the whole thing up. The Hargeisa International Book Fair is most certainly not a joke. It is now in its fifth year running and, as its name suggests, is truly international.

It is international in the sense that Somali authors, poets, artists, musicians and intellectuals from all over the world were invited to the event, reflecting the truly globalised nature of the Somali people. They have always been outward looking due to their geographical location and long seaboard, but the past two-and-a-half decades of conflict have forcibly displaced about a third of the Somali population, scattering them far and wide across the globe.

The international Somalis invited to the book fair included the young British-Somali author of the prize-winning novel, Black Mamba Boy, Nadifa Mohamed, the US-based Somali poet, Said Salah, and the respected Somali journalist and thinker, Mahamoud Sheikh Dalmar, who returned to Somaliland from Britain for the first time in thirty-six years.

Somaliland bottles its hopes in Coca-Cola plant

- A $17m bottling plant in Somaliland is the biggest private investment in a country that desperately needs foreign funds. It is Africa's, if not the world's, most isolated Coca-Cola bottling plant, a large shiny white-and-red hangar-like building in the middle of nowhere, with camels and black-headed sheep as neighbours. Inaugurated in May by Somaliland's president, Ahmed Mahamoud Silanyo, the plant has been described as a diamond in the desert. It lies an hour's drive from the capital, Hargeisa, travelling along the two-lane road to Berbera – much in need of repair – then along a bumpy track that runs past spiky acacia trees, swaths of aloe vera plants and the occasional darting dik-dik, a tiny antelope.

Just before the plant, there is a military cadet training site, with a blindingly white three-story building refurbished with UK aid. The place used to house Russian tanks during the cold war. Thick brown stone walls with rusty iron beams poking out are all that is left of the Russian presence; anything that could be removed has gone. The bottling plant with the bright red logo SBI – Somaliland Beverage Industries – is just beyond the Russian ruins. Three thick breeze blocks lie outside the entrance, which is protected by armed guards. Inside the gate, the 6,000 square metre bottling plant/warehouse, complete with a set of solar panels, dominates the compound. But just as striking are the manicured green lawns watered by sprinklers outside a row of white flats that house 60 of the 100 staff. The lawns on the 150 hectare (370 acre) site – some of which will be used for a game park – provide a surreal contrast to the dun-desert landscape outside.

Britain to open consulate general in Hargeisa (Somaliland)

HARGEISA — The British government this week unveiled its plans to open a consulate general in Hargeisa, capital city of Somaliland, as it broadens its diplomatic presence in the region. This was announced at the Hargeisa Book Fair exhibition by the visiting British Ambassador to Somalia, Matt Baugh, who said the establishment will mark a new step forward in British-Somaliland relations.

The consulate will oversee the delivery and implementation of British interest and development projects in Somaliland, as well promote relations between Hargeisa and British partners. The office will operate under the British embassy set to be opened in Mogadishu and all diplomatic contacts between Somaliland and Britain will be moved from the current Mission in Addis Ababa to the office of Ambassador Baugh.

“The British government has expressed its interest to establish this office which will be located within the British Embassy in Mogadishu,” he said. Mr Baugh added that he was happy with the existing cordial relations between the two sides.

Somalia: 10 things we've learnt this week

Somali passports

BBC- The allegations of such high-level corruption have shocked many, with estimates that around 70% of money intended for development and reconstruction in a country racked by 20 years of war was unaccounted for. The government, whose mandate expires next month, dismissed them as "absolutely and demonstrably false". But the 198-page report, published on the Somalia Report website and due to be discussed by the Security Council, contains many other revelations. Here are 10 other things we have learnt:

1: Floating armouries: Some ships travelling through the Red Sea and around the east coast of Africa increasingly use private security firms to prevent pirates based in Somalia from seizing their vessels.  But because many countries in the region will not allow them to work from their territories, these firms are increasingly turning to what the UN calls "floating armouries", which the report says is a "new and highly profitable business".

Don’t Be a Victim of Stroke - Know the Symptoms, Manage Your Risk Factors

''Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States''. Health-Report

- In just the past five years, with the growth of sophisticated imaging technology, highly effective and targeted medications and catheter-based procedures that can repair vessels or grab and remove artery blocking clots, the chance of recovery today from a stroke is better than ever before. That’s the good news. The bad news is stroke, the fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in this country, is a potent and potentially growing foe. Currently, coronary artery disease claims more victims worldwide than stroke. However, experts are now saying that if the rate of obesity, diabetes or undiagnosed hypertension continues to rise, in the coming five years “brain attack” patients will outnumber heart attack patients.

When a blood clot forms, obstructing the flow of blood to the brain, it is called an ischemic stroke. When a blood vessel ruptures and causes damage and compression of neurons in the brain, it’s called a hemorrhagic stroke. Since the brain depends on a continuous source of blood to control our various body functions, when that flow is interrupted by either an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, those body functions can stop working or only work on a limited basis. Thus, the time window to save the brain from permanent damage is very short – up to three hours in most of the stroke centers and eight hours in specialty centers.

Somaliland Diaspora can Play a Vital Role in Fostering Development Across the Region

HARGEISA, Somaliland, July 18, 2012 -- The international Somali diaspora can help to stimulate the region through remittance finance, according to the CEO of Africa's largest remittance company. Speaking at the second annual Somaliland Diaspora Agency (SDA) conference - 'Diaspora Investment in Somaliland'- held on 17th July in Hargeisa, Somaliland, Abdirashid Duale, CEO of Dahabsiiil said:

"Today, remittance finance is the fastest growing and most stable capital inflow to Somali territories. This income not only offers a vital lifeline to at-risk communities who rely on this money to survive, but it also helps to drive economic development throughout the region.

"Diaspora investment is vital to the functioning of the private sector, fostering job creation and up-skilling. Diaspora-led businesses, not only in Somaliland but the whole of Africa, play a crucial role in bringing expertise and investment to the private sector."

Number of Somali refugees in Horn of Africa passes 1 million mark

''Somalia is one of the world's longest and worst refugee crises. In the past decade only two other conflicts have forced more than 1 million people to flee their homes''. UNHCR

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 17 (UNHCR - UNHCR announced on Tuesday that Somalia's population exodus has crossed a new threshold – more than 1 million people have now fled the country for the surrounding region. The most recent arrivals continue to cite insecurity and dwindling food resources as the main reasons for their flight.

Despite last week passing the 1 million mark for the first time since Somalia descended into violence in 1991, data compiled by UNHCR for the main arrival countries of Kenya and Ethiopia also shows lower but steady numbers of people leaving Somalia. In the first six months of this year some 30,000 refugee arrivals were registered in the region. The conflict and the worst drought in decades forced more than 137,000 Somalis to leave their homes during the first half of last year. For the year as a whole, some 294,000 refugees registered in camps in the surrounding region.
