SOMALILAND: PROBING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMON SENSE. By Dr. Yusuf Dirir Ali

If a child living in a Western country claims to have been abused by his parents, the first thing the healthcare workers, police and social services do is to take that child into a safe heaven and away from the allegedly abuse parents. The same thing happens when ever a women claims to have been physically and or psychologically abused. I believe it is noble to protect all human beings from physical and psychological harm. However, the Western democracies must use the same yard stick for the rights of all human beings and not selectively impound these human rights to their citizens and to their borders.

The case I am putting forward is not about a single child or about one single woman that is being terribly abused, but it is about the rights of millions of women, children and men. This is about the rights of the population of the Republic of Somaliland.

It is well known to the international community and especially to the Western democracies that the people of Somaliland have suffered enough under Somalia’s dictatorship. The people of Somaliland went through oppression followed by ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Somalilanders single-handedly fought and defeated a brutal dictatorship. Soon after regaining their independence Somalilanders not only rebuilt their shattered towns and cities, but they also built functioning democratic institutions that constitute the basis of the peace and stability that the people of Somaliland are justly proud of.

The international community denies more than three million Somalilanders the dignity that it would extend to a child or a women living in their own countries – the right of protection and self determination. Somalilanders will never have peace of mind and will remain psychologically wounded as long as their sovereignty is not recognised.

A sovereign Somaliland will contribute immensely to the international economy and prosperity, because it has large unexploited reserves of natural resources including oil, gas and precious metals. Somaliland could become a sea gate-way for both the oil–rich Southern Sudan and heavily populated Ethiopia, which has a fast growing middle class; these two countries are both land-locked and can benefit from channelling both their imports and exports through the Berbera port in Somaliland.

Somaliland is currently contributing in the international peace and stability and is literally holding the flood-gates of terrorism, human- trafficking and sea piracy. Imaging Al shabaab and the Al-Qaida in the Arabia Peninsula getting a foot hold on both the Western and the Northern shores of the Red Sea. What will happen to the international supplies of goods and oil services?

Finally, let me probe the common sense of the Western world and pose few questions, We know that politics is about interest, well if this true, then can anyone tell me what will the people of Somaliland benefit from the reunion with the chaotic Somalia? Will the international community be better off both economically and security wise if Somaliland reunites with Somalia? And after all is the right of a single child or a women living in the Western world more valuable than the rights of the entire population of the Republic of Somaliland?

I am waiting for the Western leaders to answer my questions with action and recognise the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland.
