First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones calls on the Welsh to help East Africa (Somaliland)

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones has called on the Welsh public to support the DEC Cymru Appeal to help people suffering from severe food shortages in East Africa. The region has been hit by a severe drought, the worst in 60 years, wiping out cattle and crops. This has left at least 10 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan in desperate need of food, water and emergency healthcare.

With the situation set to deteriorate over the next 3 to 4 months the need to continue fundraising is vital in order to meet people’s needs and save lives. A British pound can provide an emergency food parcel to feed a family in Kenya or Somalia for a week.

First Minister Carwyn Jones has pledged his support to the DEC Appeal led in Wales by aid agencies Christian Aid, Tearfund, CAFOD, Oxfam Cymru, British Red Cross, Save the Children, Islamic Relief and Age Cymru and urges the Welsh public to keep on donating.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "Many of us will have seen the pictures coming out of East Africa over the past few days. Parts of the region are suffering their worst drought in 60 years and over 10 million people are at risk. I know that many members of the Welsh Somali community will be worried about family and friends in Somaliland which has been badly affected by the drought.

Families have seen their lives torn apart as the drought continues to take its toll. This is a devastating and rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis that will only worsen if we don't act now.

"The best way people in Wales can ensure that they get help to those in the most desperate need is to donate via the Disasters Emergencies Committee's East Africa Crisis Appeal. The DEC is an umbrella organisation which coordinates a number of aid agencies so that they can carry out immediate and longer-term relief work in the affected areas so I would urge people to contribute what they can to this appeal.

"DEC Cymru Chairman Jeff Williams added: “We are already seeing vulnerable people dying, with millions at risk. We need to act fast to prevent more lives being lost. The Welsh public has been remarkably generous, despite many having to tighten their belts due to the current economic situation here.

“We are determined, with the public’s support, to prevent this crisis from spiralling out of control and DEC Cymru agency members are working hard in the field with many aid workers from Wales amongst them. I would urge people to keep giving, to help us save more lives as the crisis continues to unfold."
